Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death, the Ford family was managed by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. While a small child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused through word-related associations. Ford was interested in acting during her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
